“I want to show them that it’s OK to be who you are,” she said. “After high school it gets way better. I’m doing this to make high school better and easier for people who aren’t as strong as we wish they were.”
She said it bothers her that so many LGBT teens feel they are alone.
“You should stand up for what is right even if you are standing alone … because you are not alone,” she said.
In the two days of voting a number of students cast their ballots for Moreno on the first day. On the second day, an assistant principal reportedly handed ballots back to students who had voted for her and were told to vote for someone else.

It's funny how all these homophobic bullies are too scared to let you know who they are. Dinnah leaves town... and someone just left a comment with the name None. It really puts things into perspective when someone like Andy is speaking on National television about equality, and some dumbass wants to discuss the rights of the Homecoming King. What would None have to say if the King were racist and didn't want to dance with an African American? What if the Queen were too short? Too ugly? A Jew? None, I'm not sure you paid attention to this website or Andy. Yes, you have a right to express your views (and stupidity), but this is not about Andy dancing with someone at Homecoming. Get a clue.
Let me clarify, 'none'... you are concerned with the 'right' of the heterosexual homecoming king to be offended about the gender identity of who is elected homecoming queen? Bigotry is not a 'right.' There is no justification in being offended with another person's gender identity, as this is not something that is ever 'chosen.' Also, I don't believe the homecoming king is expected to mate with the queen after election, so why this would be of any concern to him is beyond me. Of course, everyone has the right to free speech and freedom of their opinions, but this does not transfer into the freedom to deny someone else the right to participate in an event simply on the basis that you are a bigot.
what about the rights of the non gay home coming King if i was in his shoes i would not like this if she won.
where are there sides of the story
I hope the students and staff at that school run that principal out for not only being a bigot, but also a COWARD for remaining silent. If that woman thinks she can just lay low and the Dallas LGBT community is going to forget about this, she's as naive as she is prejudice. She ain't seen nothin' yet.
I dont attend this school, but i support your decision its about time students started fighting for what they believe in, Andy! Gays, lesbians, transgenders have been around for along time back then they had to hide who they really were difference now is they speak up,no shame in who they are meant to be! Its a new generation, so people like Ms. Escanilla need to stop being closed minded. New generation calls for New traditions!
It boggles the mind. She has broad support from the student body and is popular even with staff, yet the administration are adopting a regressive stance which harkens back to pre ‘civil rights’ days. They’re operating out of a previous generation’s biases not that of Andy’s peers. Hmm… I thought STUDENTS got to pick their class ‘royalty’, but apparently it always was a straw democracy; we never have had candidates elected who didn’t have the tacit approval of the ‘powers that be’. Does this sound a bit allegorical? Are we coing to stand for it?
I hear knocking on your door, Dinnah! Oh my… it’s the ACLU!! Now what do you suppose they want to visit you about? LOLOL. If Andy wants to run for Queen and the majority of students vote for her…SHUT UP!!!
EMAIL the principal, Dinnah Escanilla and voice you dissapointment with her decision. DEscanilla@dallasisd.org I sent her a mail on Thursday and never heard back, but i think it’s important to hear that her decision to discriminate against her own students, especially given the recent suicides of young gay teens can not be tolerated.
It’s about damn time that someone takes a step for us. Andy is one of my close friends and i also respect him for how he pursuits himself. No one in school has a problem with him running for queen, well just the ignorant people that always have something negative to say. “Haters”. I love my Andy Also know as Jessika. More that anything else, she has also helped me be more comfortable with myself being a trans-gender. I say she is gonna be the next Rosa Parks for the Gays. Team Andy All the way.
Go TEAM ANDY!
